I am endlessly committed to putting STEM in the hands of Black people. Seeing Black excellence and bringing our input and perspectives to the fields that shape all of our lives is of the utmost importance to me.
I was working as a manager of a swanky restaurant in Pittsburgh, PA when the NSBE Convention came to town in 2018. It was invigorating to see so many black people completely swarm our downtown, and all of them interested in STEM! We were hosting parties by Google, Facebook, and other really big names; seeing them go all out to recruit people that looked like me was incredible. It had a life-changing impact on me, I knew right then and there NSBE was something I needed to be a part of. I wish I had known about NSBE when I was a kid. I just want to give every Black kid the confidence to get excited about constructing the infrastructure of the future, curing endemic diseases, designing interplanetary settlements, engineering the systems that will help grow our food in a warming climate, or developing the artificial intelligence that will transform our world. I see being a part of NSBE as an incredible honor, and I want to be someone worthy of carrying the Torch.
